As much as I like my original idea, I feel it requires an extensive amount of research that I'm not qualified to do. I had a decent grasp on the German language, but the majority of my training has been done in American history. Maybe once I complete my PhD I can embark on such an research project. My supervisor is going to be Dr. Neiberg.

I'll start taking notes as soon as my doctoral adventure starts!

Ah I get you know. I actually quite like your original idea. I think there is a lot of mileage in it. I suppose the question goes back as far as the creation of Germany and how integrated Bavaria ever was into the Imperial German State. Who is going to be your supervisor?

We should start making notes...!

My apologies for the confusion my last reply caused. I have a research proposal that I discussed as a part of my USM application. In it I talked about the possibility of looking at the Bavarian units functioning within the Imperial German Army during the First World War. I wanted to see if the autonomy the Bavarian government enjoyed trickled down to the individual army units on the Western Front. After some conversations with the good people at USM, I realized that it might be smarter to do a US topic since USM is strong in American military history. As of yesterday, I proposed examining the role of AEF heavy artillery on the Western Front, looking at doctrine, culture and combat. I wrote my MA thesis on the role of the US Coast Artillery Corps as a part of the AEF on the Western Front, so my PhD topic would expand my prior research to encompass a greater portion of the AEF's "big guns". I hope that is a bit more clear now.

I agree, it would be great to compare notes on the military PhD experience in the US and UK. I did my MA in Canada, so it would nice to see how all three compare at the graduate level.

Robert it is interesting that, and apologies if I am wrong here, you do not have a planned research project in mind per se. Did you not have to put a proposal in when you applied? I am just wondering what the difference is between a PhD in the States to one here in the UK. Over here the process, in short hand, is to propose a subject area, spend three years (full-time) researching and writing it and then the Viva etc. By the sounds of it, there is a taught element in the states? I wonder why this is. Is there not an equivalent to the MPhil, which over here typically involves a thesis with some research training but not subject specific modules like on an MA? Considering the links between South Mississippi and Birmingham, where I am studying and will be doing my PhD, it would be interesting to compare notes on the experience on a PhD in Military History in the US and UK.

Thanks Ross, I'm glad my post was informative. As far as researching, I will stick with the Great War. I hope to continue with either the American Expeditionary Forces, focusing on heavy artillery, or studying the Bavarian forces within the Imperial German Army.

Good post Robert. Some really important things to think about when applying for your PhD and things that to be honest I had not thought about. What are you going to be researching?
